When Is the Best Time to Install a Fence in Kansas?

Timing Your Fence Project Right

In Kansas, timing your fence installation can affect everything from scheduling availability to how well the posts set. While we install fences year-round in the Wichita area, some seasons are better than others for different reasons. Here’s an honest, season-by-season breakdown.

Fall (September – November): The Sweet Spot

Fall is our top recommendation for fence installation in Kansas, and here’s why:

  • Moderate temperatures: Daytime highs in the 50s–70s are ideal working conditions. Concrete sets properly without the extreme heat or cold that can affect curing.
  • Stable soil: After a Kansas summer, the ground is firm and workable. Post holes dig cleanly without the mud of spring or the frozen ground of winter.
  • Shorter wait times: Summer is our busiest season. By fall, scheduling is easier and you may get your fence installed faster.
  • Your fence is ready for spring: Posts have all winter to fully set and cure. By the time you’re ready to enjoy your backyard in April, everything is rock-solid.

The one drawback: if you want to stain your fence right after installation, you’ll need to do it before temperatures drop below 50°F consistently, or wait until spring.

Spring (March – May): Popular but Busy

Spring is when most people think about fencing, which makes it the second-busiest season:

  • Pros: Warming temperatures, longer daylight hours, and the natural impulse to improve your property make spring a great time for a new fence. Staining can happen immediately after the fence cures (typically 2–4 weeks for new wood).
  • Cons: Kansas spring rain can delay projects. Saturated soil makes post hole digging messier and can affect how concrete sets. March and April are unpredictable — one week it’s 75°F, the next it’s 35°F with freezing rain.
  • Scheduling: Spring is our second-busiest time. Booking 3–4 weeks ahead is smart. By May, our schedule starts filling up fast.

Summer (June – August): Busiest Season

Summer is when demand peaks in the Wichita area:

  • Pros: Long days, consistent weather patterns (between storms), and dry soil conditions. If you need a fence for summer activities, pools, or keeping kids and dogs contained during break, this is when you want it done.
  • Cons: Kansas heat (95–105°F) can be extreme. Concrete cures faster but can dry too quickly if not properly managed. Our crews work early mornings to beat the heat, but extreme heat days (105°F+) may cause delays for worker safety. This is also our busiest period — booking 4–6 weeks ahead is recommended.
  • Cost note: Material prices don’t change seasonally, but high demand means less flexibility on scheduling.

Winter (December – February): Possible but Challenging

Can you install a fence in a Kansas winter? Yes. Is it ideal? Usually not.

  • Pros: Shortest wait times of the year. If you need a fence quickly and don’t want to wait until spring, winter installation is absolutely possible. The ground in the Wichita area doesn’t freeze deeply enough to prevent digging on most days.
  • Cons: Frozen ground on the coldest days requires more effort for post holes. Concrete cures much slower in cold temperatures (and can fail below 20°F without additives). Weather delays are common — ice storms, freezing rain, and cold snaps can push timelines.
  • Our approach: We use cold-weather concrete additives when necessary and monitor curing conditions carefully. If the forecast looks bad, we’ll reschedule rather than risk a poor installation.
